Our household is making this pledge because:
I want a safe clean and healthy environment for future generations especially our grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to greenhouse gas emissions, I am also very concerned about water issues and having enough fresh water for all to share. I have done workshops on both water and greening parishes and believe that we are all called to be stewards of creation and through God's grace, We must each do our small part. I have seen how the climate has changed since I was a child and am afraid that future generations may not receive the same blessings of nature that was gifted with. We use environmentally firendly products as much as possible and truly believe that all vehicles should be using Bitron to reduce tailpipe emissions. Unfortunately, one member of the household requires a walker/wheelchair when going out, so we have a van to make that accommodation. Wheelchair doesn't fit in our car. As environmental steward for St. George's Westbank, we have also made a pledge to attain "Green Parish" Certification or Accreditation and to set the example for others in the Diocese to follow. As Chair of the Eco-justice Committee for the Diocese of Kootenay, I want to be able to show by example both in my parish and as an individual the seriousness of our actions as steward's of creation in making our world a better place to live where there is 'enough for all' (fresh water, air, food, satisfactory accommoation, and preservation of nature).

Transportation
Reduce the amount I drive each week (i.e. combine trips).
Reduce vehicle idling time.
House Maintenance
Upgrade insulation, caulk and weather-strip to help my home/apartment maintain a comfortable temperature.
Lower the thermostat on my hot-water tank to 55 degrees Celsius.
Take measures to reduce my water consumption (especially hot water consumption).
Replace light-bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs; turn off lights when I am not in a room.
Install timers/motion detectors on outdoor lights.
Get rid of un-needed fridges and freezers.
Choose Energy Star appliances and electronics equipment when replacing old ones.
Reduce, reuse, recycle (in that order) when it comes to home waste.
Compost kitchen waste.
Yard Maintenance
Reduce grass lawn by planting low-maintenance ground cover.
Avoid pesticide and herbicide use.
Food
Buy-locally grown produce.
Grow some of my own food.
Here is a different example of a change I am willing to make:
I use Bi-tron products in both our vehicles to drastically reduce our CO2 tailpipe emissions to the environment. These products can also be used on any gas or diesel engine (ie. lawn mowers, boats, bikes) I also use a waterless wash for both vehicles and cleaning around the house.
